Sunday 15th February 2009 Secretary’s Report of Post Valentine’s Day Run to nowhere special….

I decided in the morning after a heavy night of Valentine’s day fun (yeah sure? - Ed) that as the Saturday had been so mild it was likely that Sunday would be similar – so before I went off to training I sent a short text to everyone saying meet at the King’s Oak at 1.45/2.00 pm.

Usual lame excuses from 95% of the group – working/hungover/battery’s flat/”not allowed as I didn’t buy her indoors anything yesterday so I’m in for it today”/arm in plaster (Barry)!/I’m in Stockton (Jim)/Norfolk (Rob) etc., etc.

Anyway in the event there was me, Phil Baker on his VFR, Keith on his Hornet 900, Michael Barratt with a pillion on a Blackbird and Mike’s friend Rashid on a Thundercat (?).  We were thinking of going off to Cambridge for tea but the weather had taken a bit of a turn half an hour earlier and was a bit grey with a few spots of very light rain, so we left the destination open and headed off for Much Hadham in Herts where we enjoyed our first stop after about 30 minutes of riding.

Cambridge was out of the question but I suggested the Westmill Tea Rooms, but forgot how to get there. Well Keith had his Prat Nav (Garmin) already showing him where he’d been – now was a chance to see if it could show us where to go.  It hadn't a clue, so brains here suggested Keith’s I-phone to get on the old WWW quickly and get a postcode for the place so we could shoot off there, as some of us were getting tea pangs.  Unfortunately the I-phone does not much like Much Hadham – it also apparently doesn’t much like any moisture in the air or to be left much out of Keith’s pocket and put in his top-box.  He did eventually book a call through a call center in Bombay to the said eating establishment to get their postcode, by which time I had caved in, taken my gloves off (which I didn’t want to do in the first place otherwise I’d never have asked Keith to check) and found the place on my Prat Nav.  We got there 15 mins later.

Phil recounts his arrest for Murder

A nice tea with toasted tea cakes, Date and Walnut cake, Lemon Drizzle cake and various hot chocolates, decaffeinated coffee and tea was quite sufficient for us to recover from the ride there.

Keith falls for Phil's story/ Keith insists !

Rashid's disbelief /Phil & Michael "friends"!

During tea, Phil told us all about his arrest for shooting someone when he worked as a lumberjack in the frozen arctic wastes but was only released by the Mounties when they realised without him they couldn’t have their lumberjack fancy dress disco in the local mining town.  Phil’s beard came into the story somewhere, as did buying 4 wives in Loughton together with a Hornet from Gaydon. His weapon was discussed and we all declined his kind offer to frisk him.  There was a reference to a gun in his pocket, but truth be told we were a bit worried that if we did frisk him something would go off in his pants - I may have got some of that wrong but in essence it’s all true.

We set off and took various routes home and all felt better for the experience.  It was better than staying in.
